Volunteer With SEAL at SMU
Students Expanding American Literacy (SEAL) pairs underserved elementary students with college-aged mentors to develop literacy and a love of learning.
Volunteer Programs
SEAL SMU members volunteer with Reading Partners of North Texas. New volunteers are trained to use Reading Partner’s evidence-based curriculum to help beginning readers build their understanding of phonetics and reading comprehension. Volunteers generally tutor one 1-3 grade elementary student once or twice a week, depending on the volunteer’s preference. Each session lasts 45 minutes and occurs at a regular time that fits the volunteer’s schedule through the semester.
Even though SEAL SMU volunteers are not full-fledged literacy professionals, we believe that instilling curiosity, confidence, and a love for reading in our students will result in stronger performance down the line. A SEAL is a tutor, mentor, play-pal, and cheerleader all rolled into one.
Becoming a Volunteer
If you are interested in volunteering with SEAL SMU, please join our mailing list. Our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out with more information. SEAL SMU membership is a semester-long commitment, so we typically recruit during the first couple weeks of the fall and spring semesters.
We invite prospective members on our mailing list to attend an information session at the start of the semester. We coordinate with Reading Partners to provide training and volunteer opportunities in Dallas elementary schools.
Please contact kyra.seal.literacy@gmail.com if you have any questions regarding volunteering.
Other Initiatives
In addition to our weekly literacy programming, SEAL SMU occasionally partners with other student organizations and community members to host fundraising and educational events.
Please contact johanna.seal.literacy@gmail.com if you are part of a nonprofit that would like to partner with SEAL SMU!
